Today’s instalment of meet the lorries comes to you directly from Berlin, where we’re talking to DACH junior PR consultant, Sven Heins.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested working in b2b tech PR and marketing?
Having a genuine interest in tech trends and how tech shapes the (business) world is a good starting point. It makes you dig deeper into details and helps you keep track of a very dynamic, ever changing business environment.
Reading strategy papers, press releases, your colleagues’ pitches, and newsletters from media outlets also helps, since you need to get familiar with many topics and learn to differentiate what’s important from what’s not. Part of this is getting acquainted with tech terminology, which can appear incomprehensible at first glance. Thankfully, it’s actually quite logical and helpful – most of the time at least.
What skills are essential for your b2b PR role?
It requires good analytical thinking to quickly familiarise yourself, for example, with a new client’s business model. Also, you need to be curious and be able to view things from different perspectives. Since a key part of my job is to track media activities / opportunities and act as quickly as possible, being well organised also helps.
What is your favourite part of working in PR?
I really like the combination of strategic thinking and getting to know a wide variety of trends and businesses.
What’s the best part of working at the lorries?
The open and dynamic atmosphere! Everyone is keen on achieving great results and is very supportive. Since I am new to PR, it’s great to be able to ask questions.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Hm, I’m not sure if this is a pleasure, but I tend to skip breakfast more often than I should and eat something deliciously unhealthy on my way to work.
What would your memoir be called?
“Confessions” in the tradition of Saint Augustin. I think one should have interesting experiences in life and truthfully reflect on them.
Which three items can’t you live without?
Well, my glasses for obvious reasons, my phone (it feels like a part of my body), and chocolate.
Which three people, dead or alive, would you choose to be on your team in a zombie apocalypse?
Hm, that’s a hard one. They would not only need to be intelligent or interesting to talk to, but also kind and easy to get along with. I have always admired Bertrand Russell in that respect – from what I read about him. Also, Hannah Arendt. And maybe Julius Caesar to actually win the zombie war!
