It’s time to meet another (relatively) new lorry! Today we’re hearing from Boston-based account director, Alex Gil. Read on to find out about her top b2b pr skills, and learn why she hates “spin”.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested working in b2b tech PR and marketing?

Don’t be intimidated. Tech, especially b2b tech, can often be daunting for those who have never worked in it. It’s a fast-moving, often highly technical and complex industry that can be challenging to master and understand. But the challenge also brings with it many rewards. You get to be a part of technology that is truly impacting the future, while learning how to problem-solve and think strategically in ways you may have never thought possible before.

What skills are essential for your b2b PR role?

Creative, strategic thinking is really important – tech moves so quickly and with it, so does the media landscape. What worked six months ago may no longer be the right approach – so it’s important to be flexible and to think outside the box to generate results for clients. It’s also essential to closely follow media conversations and the news – that’s fundamental to everything we do in a PR program.

What is your favourite part of working in PR?

PR is so dynamic and fast-moving. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it makes all the hard work that much more rewarding. Getting to watch a client evolve from a relatively unknown start-up to a rising leader, or a legacy brand get the recognition they seldom had before PR is so rewarding. And there’s nothing that can top reading a feature story or seeing a quote from your client in a major publication. I still get giddy when I see big pieces of coverage hit. It’s the best feeling ever.

What’s the best part of working at the lorries?

The lorries accepted and welcomed me even before I started my role. From my very first interview through my first few months, I’ve been supported and felt like part of the team. It’s also been fun to get to work with a global team, and to be a part of the massive growth that RLYL is currently experiencing. The future is bright!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Bad reality television. I watch other stuff, but there’s something about watching bad TV that is so cathartic and relaxing. It requires zero brainpower and sometimes that’s what you need after a long, hectic day working in PR.

What was your first job / most unusual job?

Not really unusual, but before I went back to college I worked in bakeries and as a pastry chef. I don’t bake as often as I used to these days, but I’m always happy to whip up some delicious baked goods for the team!

Which industry jargon do you want to ban?

“Spin” – I think all of us PR folks can agree that it’s one of the most misunderstood and misdirected terms in the industry. It also completely oversimplifies what we do. PR should not be deceptive or formed around inaccuracies. Successful PR should authentically represent a company or person, and is the foundation on which brands and reputations are built.
